The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)

This legislation came into full force in October 2004 and affects almost all businesses and services. It was extended in 2005 to emphasise public authorities' duties to promote the interests of disabled people.

The DDA and the many associated regulations, standards and advisory documents aim to remove discrimination and improve disabled peoples' access to goods and services. It covers such things as shops, restaurants, hotels and, from 2006, even some private clubs.

Enhancing disability access helps the elderly too

Elderly people may face the same discrimination as disabled people when trying to access services. Movement, eyesight, hearing can all deteriorate with increasing age.
