The Equality Act - replacing the The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)

The DDA legislation came into full force in October 2004 and affected almost all businesses and services.

The DDA and the many associated regulations, standards and advisory documents aimed to remove discrimination and improve disabled peoples' access to goods and services. It covered such things as shops, restaurants, hotels and, from 2006, even some private clubs.

In 2010, the DDA was replaced by the Equality Act which consolidated a range of equality legislation e.g. that covering race and gender, into one Act. In terms of disability discrimination, the new Act strengthened the requirements on businesses.

Enhancing disability access helps the elderly too

Elderly people may face the same discrimination as disabled people when trying to access services. Movement, eyesight, hearing can all deteriorate with increasing age.
